Anna was happy to get his lettr. This afternoom she a had a long talk with Mr. Raymond about them. She discusses their conversation. Mr. Raymond praise Markham to be better than Joaquin Miller. Miss Fay came over. She told Mary Fay about her and Edwin. Mary feels that Edwin is a great man. She is proud of him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
